With this site being my blog, I've decided to take a break from reporting on the Mets and to take a trip down memory lane...
August 25th, 2005- My Dad surprised me by taking me to my first Mets game this day. I didn't know about it too far ahead of time. We took a bus down to watch the Mets take on the Nationals. Kris Benson was slated to start the game against Esteban Loaiza. I took in all the sites and sounds of the stadium that I had watched on television for as long as I can remember.
It was the day before football practice was going to start. It was a blistering hot day and we were sitting in the nose bleed section. I didn't care. I was in heaven. Benson and the rest of the team take the field and before I know it, we're down big. Benson couldn't last through the first inning and was quickly replaced by Juan Padilla, who pitched fantastically in relief.
I recall telling my father about an up and coming catcher in the organization who recently been called up from Double A. His name? Mike Jacobs. When he came up to pinch hit late in the game I was wondering how cool it'd be to see his first hit in the bigs. Boy did he deliver. Jacobs pounded a ball into deep right field for a three-run home run.
I was elated. It was the only bright spot on this day. The Mets got pounded but at the end of the day I didn't care. I got to spend a day at Shea with my father watching our team.
This will be an ongoing series about my trips to both Shea Stadium and Citi Field. As of right now this is the first of five games I've been to, and I'm trying to go down at least twice this year.
